THE STORY BEHIND THE IMPRISONMENT OF APOSTLE AYO BABALOLA IN 1932

After the missionary tour of Ekiti and Ondo States and part of Edo State which was very successful, Babalola retreated to his adopted hometown, Ilofa, by the end of 1931, to fortify himself spiritually.

During this period, he embarked on a 40-day fasting and prayer. He spent the 40 days on top of the Odo-Owa mountain now consecrated as Babalola Praying mountain.

While on the mountain, the Lord appeared to him in a vision and told him that an instrument of honour was in the furnace and that He would want him(Babalola) to go into the furnace to fetch it. Babalola assured God that he was ready for anything He wanted him to do.

It was on this mountain on February 25, 1932, that Apostle Babalola battled with Satan, who wanted to take his life; he engaged in warfare prayer for close to four and a half hours before finally securing victory at the end. Pastors David Adio, J.A Medayese, and Ben Adefabijo accompanied him to the mountain during this particular encounter.

In March 1932, few days after the spiritual fortification, a warrant for the arrest of Babalola was issued from Ilorin in present Kwara State.

The charges against Babalola read that :Two women at Otuo accused Babalola of calling them witches thereby forcing them to take a specifically banned poison to exonerate themselves of the accusation.

The banned poison Babalola allegedly made them to drink happened to be the particular bark of a tree called obo. Every one in the country knew that no one, witch or not, had ever taken this poison without an adverse effect; it was either the person died instantly or vomited strange things; neither of these things happened to the women though.

So, with the cooperation of the colonial government that obviously saw Babalola as a threat, Babalola was arrested for preaching against witches. He was taken to Ilorin and then transferred to Benin City where he was charged to court based on this accusation.

Many devout Christians were outraged and wanted to hire attorneys to defend the case, but Babalola refused to be represented, saying that the Lord had set his path.

He was sentenced to jail for six months in Benin City in March, 1932. It was believed by many till today that the sentencing was a result of persecution, an attempt to end the ministry of this resurging prophet who was causing some mission churches and the colonial government a great deal of concern.

Now, there was another prisoner at the Benin prison yard by the name Cyprian Ufon. Mr Ufon who hailed from Creek Town in Calabar area was very sick and depressed. Babalola prayed for him and he was healed and cured of his depression. He quickly became a follower of Babalola. Babalola later understood that he(Ufon)was the instrument of honour God had told him about during his prayer retreat at Ilofa.

Babalola electrified and turned the prison yard to a house of God. Many prisoners and warders were healed and saved. Notably was the case of a pregnant lady, also from Creek Town who had safe delivery through the ministration of Babalola in the prison. The warders also brought their families and relatives to receive healing through the prayers of Babalola.

On June 2, 1932, Pastors Idris Vaughan and George Perfect arrived in Nigeria as the first missionaries of the Apostolic Church based in Britain. They traced Babalola to Prison and paid him a visit. During the visit, the missionaries heard with their own ears what the Lord had done through Babalola in the lives of the warders and prisoners.

Babalola was eventually released in October, 1932 after serving his jail term.

THE STORY OF THE AMAZING APAPA – OSHODI- OWORONSHOKI – OJOTA EXPRESSWAY

WHERE PREVIOUS FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS FAILED, PRESIDENT BUHARI HAS SHOWN PRAGMATISM!

THE STORY OF THE AMAZING APAPA – OSHODI- OWORONSHOKI – OJOTA EXPRESSWAY

The Apapa seaport is an old port that was founded in the early 15th Century. It served the old Oyo Empire and it’s estimated 500,000 Slaves may have been shipped from the old Apapa Port to the Americas from the West African coast.

Today the Apapa Port is the biggest port in Nigeria. More than half of the Nigerian maritime trade passes through Apapa quays and it might shock some Nigerians to know that it is a transhipment centre for inland countries like Chad and Niger. What that means is that goods going to these nations by sea offload their cargo at Apapa wharf and this shipment go over-land. This has been going on many years before the current administration. Therefore plans to build a rail track into Niger may not sound awkward after all.

Apapa Port houses five private terminals operated by AP Moller, ENL Consortium Limited, Apapa Bulk Terminal, Greenview Development Nigeria Ltd and Lilypond Inland Terminal. These specialised facilities have more than 10 berths for handling cereals, grains, machinery, construction material, and perishable items like foodstuff, minerals, fertilisers, flour, salt, sugar etc. Two flour mills and a processing plant are present on the port premises, close to the bulk terminals.

Crude oil and petroleum products are handled at the eight jetties. Fishing is important for the locals, hence the port has four fishing wharves for handling fishing boats. Coal is received at the 150 metre long Ijora wharf. Lagos port also has four tank farms for storing refined petroleum products.

The port’s container terminal spans 55 hectares and has a total quay length of 1005 metres. It has an annual container capacity of over 1,000,000 TEUs and 298 reefer connections.

A major factor that led to the creation of Apapa Port was the completion of the Western railway with Lagos as the main terminus, thereafter a need arose for a facility to load and discharge goods in either direction of Western Nigeria and the Northern provinces by rail to and from the port. But the rail project into the port was abandoned giving way to vehicular traffic. And as the port grew trucks became the preferred means of transporting goods to and from the port, parking on the roadside became a regular occurrence.

There was therefore a need to build a major road. The Oshodi–Apapa Expressway was constructed between 1975 and 1978 as a major route to Tincan and Apapa Port and also a major route into the country from Murtala Mohammed International Airport. But as a result of neglect and so many years of usage without maintenance, portions of the road collapsed.

The Goodluck Jonathan led administration approved contracts for the reconstruction of the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway in August of 2013. The contract for the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway was granted to Julius Berger Nigeria PLC for N15 billion and a 15-month completion term. After the 2015 general elections, however, work on the road came to a halt.

On Sunday 11, August 2018, gridlock caused by a long queue of trucks extended from Mile 2 to Ijesa along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway; a distance of 14.2km, which usually takes 37 minutes (drive time); trucks parked on the road for days, thereby locking up the entire Lagos City with estimated population of 23.42 million persons (2018 projection figure). Industry experts adviced the Federal Government that the gridlock was costing the Nigerian economy trillions of naira annually.

The Buhari administration decided to intervene immediately. The contract for the rehabilitation of the road from Apapa to the toll gate on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Lagos state was approved by the Buhari administration in July 2018. The reconstruction project was awarded to Dangote Group, in addition, the government would grant the Dangote group a three-year tax exception. In 2018, the Federal Executive council approved N72.9bn for the reconstruction of Oshodi Apapa expressway road in Lagos.

The project is expected to be complete before President Buhari leaves office in 2023, however large sections of the new expressway is already being used by road users and commercial trucks. The Federal Government stated in April 2021 that the Oshodi–Apapa Expressway was virtually ready for use.

The road reconstruction has been divided into four sections to ease port congestion and gridlock at the Apapa axis. Section 1 which spans from Liverpool Round through Creek Road to Beachland near Sunrise is about 10 km, while section 2 is 8.4 km and spans from Beachland to Cele Bus Stop.

Finally, to get a clear picture of what this road looks like – the new Apapa Oworonshoki Expressway will be a major expressway connecting Nigeria’s biggest port to the rest of the world – from Apapa to Somolu via Surulere and Mushin in Lagos. It is a six-lane expressway with two one-way service roads parallel to the expressway. The expressway crosses other major expressways, Lagos-Badagry Expressway and Ikorodu Road. It also passes Tin Can Island, its starts from the Port of Lagos, also known as Apapa Port. The expressway will host some of LAMATA’s BRT stops. President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2018 released N73 billion to work on the road to immediately address the gridlock which was crippling the Apapa Port and Lagos City.

President Buhari administration has recorded another unrivalled Legacy Milestone.

Congratulations to Mr President’s pragmatism.

Olunloyo ‘s works to Awolowo

Dr. Omololu Olunloyo, a forner Governor of Oyo State under the NPN said “I won’t lie to you, I wasn’t in Awolowo’s Party but I respect him a lot. I would enter his house in Oke Ado and drink beer, enjoyed myself. One day, someone said Baba wanted to see me, I went to him, I said “baba is it true that you want to see me?”, He said, “Omololu yes it is true.”.
“I said ‘Baba they won’t vote for you in this Nigeria. You are a truthful person, you are too honest. Nobody will want you to become President.’ Baba replied ‘but should we allow this trend to continue, Omololu?’ I said “it is difficult to stop sir. People want someone that will leave the gate of CBN vault opened, you will lock it. You know commercial banks opened by 8am and closed by 4pm but they don’t leave till 6pm until they balance their books every day, CBN doesn’t balance, they just go home. I know you Baba, you will want CBN to balance every day and send you report. No one will vote for you. This is Nigeria, it is a country of OLE, Thieves. They have the resources to prevent you from getting there and even if you got there, they will turn this country upside down, there will be chaos, they will ensure they shut you down. I know them…’

“And look at what is happening in Nigeria today, is that not the case? Thieves everywhere. Even those supposedly famous Judges, see the amount of money and arms they are hiding in their homes?
“I don’t see how a just man can rule Nigeria successfully. This is a country of THIEVES…”

How kidnapping kingpin Vampire was killed by IRT police team

From my Archives

On January, 26, 2015, a Malaysian based businessman, Sopuruchukwu Igweanyiba, was kidnapped by Vampire when he accosted him in a car wash located around World Bank area of Owerri, Imo State. A brother to the businessman told Crime Alert that Vampire sighted his brother’s Range Rover SUV at the popular car wash and demanded to see the owner. “The people operating the car wash didn’t know who he was and they ignorantly called my brother and told him someone was looking for him. He ordered my brother into his own vehicle with a gun and took him away. That was on a Sunday and he didn’t contact us for ransom until Wednesday when he demanded for N100 million.

“We begged him that we don’t have such an amount and he reduced it to N50 million. We begged again and he reduced it to N30 million and later, stopped at N20 million. We told him that all we could raise was N5 million and he refused. After several pleadings, he told us that if we fail to pay the money, it will be the last time we will hear from him. My brother was the only person in his camp, but he took my brother to Ugwuoji area of Mbaitolu Local Government Area of the State and shot him seven times. He dumped him inside a gutter and left him to die. That was around 8.00pm. Few hours later, my brother saw a security man and begged him to take him to hospital. The security man was scared and he went and called the Police who later took my brother to the hospital. My brother was in the hospital for three weeks and died on February 23, 2015 from his wounds.”

Police team swings into action: Crime Alert learned that based on these startling revelations, the team swung into action and succeeded in arresting five members of his gang namely, Obinna Elah, 26, from Orlu and Vampire’s second in command, Arinze Abecheta, 24, from Okohia, Isiala Mbano Local Government and Chukwuebuka Ikeazota, 23, and Samuel Ugochukwu, 24, both from Arochukwu in Abia, the sixth suspect, and the fifth caught alive, was Clifford Aheana from Omu Awa in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers. Police said they recovered five AK 47 rifles and an AK 47 magazine containing 300 rounds of ammunition from the gang, while charms were also recovered from the body of Vampire who was killed during the operation.

The gang members were arrested by 1.00 a.m on Thursday, March 2, 2017 after a gun battle at Omu Awa forest in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers. The Police Special Forces working under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, swooped on the hideout of Henry Chibueze aka ‘Vampire’ and his gang and engaged them in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours. This operation was successfully carried out as the dreaded Vampire, died during the shootout with the Police Special Forces while all the other suspects were arrested and exhibits recovered from them.

Meanwhile, Owerri was thrown into celebration when news of the death of Vampire spread into town as people thronged the Police Command Headquarters to have a glimpse of the corpse of a man who had brought death, sorrow, pain and agony to their lives. They waited patiently until the IRT operatives who brought in Vampire’s remains from Rivers State, arrived the Headquarters. Rounds of gunfire were shot in celebration as the operatives arrived and the leader of the team, Abba Kyari, was immediately lifted off his feet by his men the moment he was spotted. The operatives then took the corpse round Imo State to reassure the residents that the police is determined to ensure they have a safe society.

These people were hailed to no end by musicians but 99% of them are nowhere to be found today although almost all of them are alive but the musicians don’t know them anymore.
Their destinies ruined by lack of circumspection.

If you are wealthy today, use it in the way of God not to showcase to musicians while members of your families and friends are dying of hunger. Tomorrow may not be as you expect, no condition is permanent. This worldly enjoyment is ephemeral and deceitful. A word is enough for the wise.
