I wondered why I was in the queue of accused at all. I am intelligent, aggressive, young, totally committed to my God. What am I doing here with this sheet of supposed sins in my hand I wondered?
I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t fornicate, I don’t steal, I am righteous. Others should be here not me.
It was finally my turn to face the Man.
I placed my sheet before Him, He glanced at it and sighed softly. He looked at me and calmly said, ‘Guilty of idol worship.’
Imagine my anger, my fury, my indignation. I jumped out of the chair and said ‘Of course not! Check the sheet again, check the name, It can’t be mine.’
He sighed again and mentioned one of my names that no one knows.
I would not be stopped. It’s impossible’ I yelled. I worship only God, the Most High, Maker of heaven and earth, the King of kings and Lord of lords. I bow down to none, I have no talisman, no amulet, no pot underneath my bed.
‘You are guilty of idol worship’ He repeated calmly.
He looked at me, I looked at Him. It seemed like forever. The room was silent. I could hear the clock ticking.
Then slowly I understood.
I am never late for bus/train station or air flight but I am always late to church – I blinked.
My payments to services I enjoy eg: Dstv, phone bills etc, are never late but I haven’t given offerings/tithes in three months – I looked down.
When meeting one of our local chiefs last week I would not even pick a call in the presence of earthly royalty, but I WhatsApp in church
I wouldn’t interrupt my performance appraisal with my boss for anything but I missed church last week because of a series on TV
I wouldn’t let a day end without talking to my spouse but today I just said Hi God, Bye God. And I didn’t even pray last night – The room began to feel hot.
I would never miss going to the bank because of the weather but I missed fellowship on Wednesday and Friday because it was drizzling .
I would wear my party colors to party meetings and not care what anyone thought of me but I hate to talk to my workmates about God because of what they will think of me.
I always have the latest tech gadget you can think of but my bible is so worn out. I can’t even find the book of Jude in my bible anymore.
The last thing to touch before going to bed is my phone and the first thing in the morning….chating on whatapp or replying offline messages. And never bordering to talk with God or reading His word.
I felt so hot in the room, a nervous sweat on my forehead, I felt so ill and weak, all of my anger and self-righteousness was gone, leaving immense guilt in its wake.
I slowly got of the chair and knelt by His feet and said ‘I am sorry, I am guilty as charged, Guilty of idol worship, guilty of placing others; humans, technology before You. I am guilty of idol worship.’
He smiled gently, looked at me with those passionate eyes of His full of love and He gave me a fresh sheet!and said, Deliver souls!!
If time would permit u,  u can also share or inform others to alert them as I know they are not aware of what they are doing.

I have always wondered why the Jews did not and still don’t  believe Christ resurrected after three days,  until I was led to a scripture in the Bible,  which shows it was JUST ONE LIE that for them, nullified what Christ did.  What was the lie?
The Chief priests told the guards to lie that the disciples came to steal the body at night,  while they were sleeping. They were given money to tell this lie and they told the lie. This lie is what has robbed many Jews of the gift of Salvation.
Reminds me of Carol’s story…
Carol was on the bed with her husband on that fateful Saturday morning,  when her phone rang,  it was her twin sister calling.  Simultaneously,  the door bell rang,  David her husband went for the door,  while she received her call.
” Carol,  please do me a favour,  my husband will call you soon,  tell him we were out all day yesterday.. Together…Tell him,  we went shopping,  and got back late around 11:45pm” Christy rushed her words
” But that is a lie, and I don’t tell lies. ” Carol answered
” Please,  Carol,  just this one lie,  save my life,  and I promise after this I.will stop my promiscuity…”She pleaded as she dropped the call…
Meanwhile,  downstairs, David was being interrogated by some police officers,  who found his ID card at a crime scene the previous nite.
David told them he had nothing to do with the crime as he was at home with his wife, that night from about 6pm.  He told them to give him a minute to call his wife, as she was a witness.  He shouted Carol’s name and told her to come downstairs.
Carol was on her way down,  when Christy’s husband called…
” Hello Emma..,  Good morning,  happy weekend… Fine… What?  Your wife?.. Yes we were together yesterday till late at night… I even got home around 11:45pm ..ok. No problem “
At this point,  David rose up in shock and fear,  as the officials were looking at him like they had nailed him…
” Carollll…. What sort of lie did you just tell,  we were both at home.. ” The officer cut in
” Mr David,  don’t put words in her mouth,  you have been telling us lies,  we have your wife’s voice on tape. Definitely you were at the crime scene and you killed Miss Kike after you raped her”  He brought out the handcuffs
” What? ” Carol shouted.
Before Carol could fully grasp what happened and explain what truly happened,  her husband was behind bars. Carol asked Christy to speak up,  which she did,  but the case was against them,  because of just ONE LIE, that had been recorded.
David was sentenced to life imprisonment and he spent 30 years before the real culprit was found,  it was his cousin who had stolen his wallet.  The victim had struggled with the rapist,  it was then the wallet fell.  The cousin picked it up,  but the ID card had fallen.
JUST ONE LIE  tampered with a man’s destiny,  be careful of every word that proceeds out of your mouth..
The one lie,  the soldiers at the tomb of Jesus said thousands of years back,  is still what is making the Jews resist CHRIST as the Messiah..
” They told the soldiers, “You must say, ‘Jesus’ disciples came during the night while we were sleeping, and they stole his body.  So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.”
Matt 28:13&15
BE careful of that ONE LIE. it goes beyond you.It can affect Generations.

It Is Not My Portion By Dr Betta Edu

How many the pregnant women that have gone to an early grave for this death-dealing cliche!
The burden is too heavy in my heart. First I lost my neighbour; a PHD holder because her mother took her to mount Zion prayer house to deliver her baby saying if she goes to the hospital they will do Cesarian Section (operation) for her and she will die. Sadly she died in prayer house. Again another close woman died last week still at a prayer house after labouring for days with a breech pregnancy!
Who ever told our women that if you go through a Cesarian Section you are not a real woman and you don’t know what labour pain is??? It’s a lie from the pit of hell. Strong soldiers, bravest of Heroes don’t Go to war with out scars… that scare shows that your a stronger woman who had to undergo a tear to birth greatness. ( The will tear you after all…whether the tear the stomach or the tear the vagina for episiotomy you will still get a tear)
WHO EVER TOLD YOU THOSE LIES THAT IF YOU HAVE CS YOU ARE NOT A HEBREW WOMAN? MUST YOU BE HEBREW? WHAT IS WRONG IN BEING NIGERIAN? ( for your information Hebrew women like Racheal in bible days had complications at birth and died from it because there was no CS ask Racheal Benjamin’s mother when you get to heaven! Those false prophets should stop seeing fake visions for you; because the will still say the benediction at your grave side!
So why are we deceived? God gave Drs the skills to manage you. If baby size is normal, lie normal and contractions ok as well as the nature and structure of your pelvic bone and cervical opening ok you will deliver Per Vagina. But If you got one of this not proportionate, then CS is in order pls.
Women wake up! Pregnancy is not an emergency, plan and make your decisions to seek right care on time. Save gradually for it over 9 months. Its you who will die from wrong decision not the man. 2 weeks later he will definately bring in another woman who will punish your children! Receive sense!
This week I spoke to over 400 pregnant women and we shared our experiences. I will continue to do this!

“Coffin For Head of State” (In memory of Fela Kuti and other Nigerians who were voice of freedom)

On this day in 1977, dozens of armed soldiers raided Kalakuta Republic, the home of Fela Kuti located at 14 Agege Motor Road, Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos, Nigeria. “Before the attack on Fela’s home, he made a record called Zombie, about the Nigerian military regime. In the song, soldiers are called zombies for obeying orders blindly.” The raid was carried out by the Military government headed by Olusegun Obasanjo.

Fela’s home was burned down. The raid led to the death of his mother and lost of many intellectual properties.

They wanted to kill the only prominent voice of that time. The voice of freedom and equal rights.

He talks about no food, light, and security for the citizens
He talks about corruption in government
He talks about vagabond in power- leadership
He talks about police and army brutality.
He talks about Human Rights and inequalities in Nigeria.
He talks about African culture and identity.
He talks about the suffering and smiling mentality of Nigerian citizens
He talks about ignorance and fear of Nigerian citizens
He talks about black Man Power and Philosophy
He talks about the inequality in United Nation.
He talks about corruption in church and mosque.
He talks about almost every thing we suffer today.

40yrs thereafter, no leaders, no food, no light, no jobs, no security in Nigeria.

Police and army brutality still part of our everyday live. Political elites and their counterparts in public offices now steal public fund on Dollars and Pound notes. Nigerian women now in competition with men on corrupt practices. No political party with clear ideology. No vision, no goal..Now, we have the most confused, corrupt, and ignorant youths. More problems and less solutions.

For many of us, the word “Kalakuta Republic” is now an idea, a philosophical and political movement. No battalion of army can stop the idea whose time as come.

I represent that philosophical ideology. A Nigeria for all Nigerians.

The dead horse theory

The tribal wisdom of the Plains Indians, passed on from generation to generation, says that: “When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.”

However in GOVERNMENT today, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

1. Buying a stronger whip.

2. Changing riders.

3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.

4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses.

5. Lowering the standards so that dead horses can be included.

6. Reclassifying the dead horse as living-impaired.

7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.

8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.

9. Providing additional funding and/or training to increase the dead horse’s performance.

10. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse’s performance.

11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overhead and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses.

12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.

And, of course…

13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

14. Castigating anyone not loyal to the dead horse as being biased cos he/she is not same tribe or religion as the dead horse……..

“`There’s a notorious programme currently going on called THE BIG BROTHER NAIJA. The winner of this notorious show is expected to walk away with a whopping N45 million and a breathtaking car. All that is required to win this show is to be Live with a bunch of fellow crazy, irresponsible people, do all sorts of immoral things, and, viola, you’re the winner.

Next thing, you’re called a celebrity, winning big advertisement contracts and becoming the face of multinational companies.

If only there could be an educating version of this programme. If only they could house some intelligent people in like manner and make them compete for similar prizes. But, no! Our people do not encourage sanity. Our society promotes evil over good, indecency over decency, immorality over morality, and ungodliness over godliness.

The best in Mathematics competitions will go home with either a carton of cowbell milk or Indomie noodles, ridiculous stipends and laughable prizes. Yet these morons in BBN will earn millions for coming to suck breasts, speak thrash, display nudity, and get under the sheets on International TVs.

Our rich individuals, companies and corporate organisations will spend huge sums of money sponsoring dirty shows like BBN and Beauty Pageants where they will enthrone satanic activities, display nudity, molest our under aged girls, and make them win on bottom power rather than on real beauty and brains. Can anyone forget the Anambra State born Chidinma Okeke saga in a hurry?

What a wasted generation! What a time! How do we raise, nurture and produce the next Chike Obis, Chinua Achebes, Wole Soyinkas, Cyril stover, Apostle olatunde Adekunle, and yes, P.O.C. Akorefes???? What foundation are we laying for coming generations? What message of hope and legacy are we leaving behind? What epistle are we sending to the future to testify to it that the past made some level of contributions. Is Immorality the legacy we really want to hand down to the next generation? Are we not losing our minds?

Let all people of goodwill come together and raise alarm against this dirty programme. Let us all with one voice and in unison say, “We’ve had enough of this nonsense.” Let us blow the trumpet in Zion and declare war on these encouragers of evil tendencies and promoters of these demonic programmes targeted at our highly impressionable youths. We should see that this programme is replaced with a more intelligent and educative programme.

Nigeria is broke morally and financially, yet the sponsors are wasting millions of Naira on a highly immoral programme. Please what is the lesson that one can learn from this Big Brother show? What can our YOUTHS pick from it? I know this kind of write up doesn’t get many shares. But if we keep quiet, then we are silent conspirators.

So share. Share until a thought process is provoked in the heart of everyone and we can stand up to say, Enough of this nonsense.”“`

During the third century, an oppressive Roman Emperor called Emperor Claudius II had made it a capital punishment (death) to worship and serve Christ.
He had decreed the Romans to serve and worship his gods, and deprived the young Roman soldiers of getting married.
But an elderly Christian had stood his ground for his faith and had insisted on serving Jesus Christ and preaching the love of God to the young soldiers.
This was considered treason against the government.
He was arrested, sentenced to death and jailed. In the last weeks of his life in the prison, the jailer (prison commander) who observed that he was very learned and possessed very good Christian character, brought his blind daughter to him to be giving her lessons.

He taught her about God and told her many Roman histories and stories from the Bible. He taught her the love of God. The blind girl got so used to the elderly Christian prisoner. On his last night he left a note for Julia, the blind girl, encouraging her to love God and serve Him. And in ending the note, he wrote: “From your Valentine”.
His death sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D.

*The name of this martyr was Valentinus*, a man who died for standing for the Preaching of the Christ and teaching people about the love of God.
So, for his love for God, he was regarded as ‘Saint’.
Archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb; an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine. During 496 AD, the Pope marked February 14 as celebration in honor of his martyrdom.

*February 14, is known as Valentine Day. But the essence of Valentine Day historically was a celebration in honor of the martyrdom of a devoted preacher, Valentinus, who stood on his faith in Christ against the devilish idolatry decrees of a Godless Emperor.*
*He preached Christ to the Roman soldiers and spread the love for God and humanity when it was a crime to do so. The day he was martyred was declared “Valentine Day”. February 14, 270 AD.*

However, the devil has rewritten history today. All over the world, the history has successfully been erased and rewritten the way the devil wanted. The reason for the DAY has been blotted out from people’s memory and a minor aspect of the whole story had been blown beyond proportion. The little card note Valentinus had left behind for Julia, his young beloved convert, whom he taught, preached to and prayed for, had ended with: “From Your Valentine”.
*On February 14, in the year 270.AD, somebody died for Christ and is now in Heaven, but on February 14, 2017, several people will die spiritual death.*

The Destinies of several young men and girls will be aborted that day, because the devil had changed the reason for the Valentine Day celebrations. He had rubbed off living and dying for Christ and replaced it with living and dying on the bed of immorality.
That day, many young girls and ladies will give their virginity away for a gift of phones, ipads, bags, clothes, and even valueless gifts as little as chocolate, sweet, fried chickens and plates of pepper-soup and salad.

By the evening of this year Feb 14, demons of fornication and adultery will invade our streets and storm our night clubs and hotels to take register of those who are dying soon of STDs, including new candidates who are going to contact HIV and AIDS.
On Feb 14 this year, forces of evil are coming down on adulterated Valentine Day to possess people with the spirit of Rape and drug abuse. Imagine the amount of pregnancy preventive drugs and materials that shall be sold. Harlots will sell that day. There will be Christian backsliders that day….BECAUSE SOME GLORIOUS DESTINIES WILL BE ABORTED ON VALENTINE DAY.

*The story of Reuben, Genesis 35:21-22a:*
21. Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22. And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.
A strange spirit came upon Reuben, the first born of Jacob, and he went and slept with his father’s young wife. Israel heard about it and said nothing. Nothing was heard about it again for many years, and we never heard that Reuben asked for forgiveness or repented or became sober about it and the matter died just like that. Really?
So many events came over it, nobody mentioned it again. He went with the rest of Jacob’s children to Egypt; he saw the glories of Egypt. He was welcomed into the palace of Joseph and ate with him in the royal palace. He grew and had many children and everything was going fine for him till the day their father would say the last prayers for them and give them his final decree.

At the point of death, whatever he said was final for life.
He gathered them together for the final blessing and began to bless them all. But he began with Reuben, the first son, who was to be the heir who should carry the highest blessings among the children.
The record was opened to his long forgotten atrocity. He thought it had been swept under the carpet. He thought he was smart and he had had a simple fun. But his father opened his mouth for his final blessing and said: Gen. 49:3-4 (NKJV)
3. “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
4. Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—He went up to my couch.
Though he was the beginning of Jacob’s strength, he was supposed to be an epitome of Excellency of dignity and power. He was to be naturally blessed and was born to be a man of natural dignity and power, but….HIS DESTINY WAS ABORTED the day he had “fun” with his father’s young wife.

So, his own verdict was: *”You shall not Excel”* from a man who was anointed to proclaim a final verdict on the Sons of Israel. Reuben was destined to be a royal dignified personality above his siblings, but for that single night of ‘fun’ with that woman.
Many people will have a lot of lustful funs on Feb 14, and wake up Feb 15 morning as normal, but the truth is: long after a very hot pressing iron had been disconnected from the power source; it would still be hot for a while, until it begins to grow cold. Some power cable would be disconnected from the power source of some people on Feb 14.

Some young men and women will place their entire life virtues and destinies in the hand of marine agents that night.
Feb 14 evening is a ‘Night of Fun’, when many men and ladies will slaughter their destinies on the bed of lustful pleasure. By Feb 15 morning it is done!

Destiny Auctioned to a young man or a lady whose future has been mortgaged to the devil.
If Joseph had had a fun with Potiphar’s wife, he would never have got to the palace to see the type of Glory he saw. He escaped that trap which would have aborted his destiny on which so many lives in Egypt and Canaan land, including the lives of his generation unborn depended upon.

There is a great story in *Proverbs 7:6-27*. It is a sad story of a young man on his own “Valentine Night”.
He had thought he wanted to have a fun that night, he had thought he wanted to enjoy himself, but crashed his future in a night of fun.
*Proverbs 7:21-23*
21. With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
With her flattering lips she seduced him.
22. Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter,
Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks,
23. Till an arrow struck his liver.
As a bird hastens to the snare,
He did not know it would cost his life.
I beg every child of God reading this post to send it to their loved ones especially all those whom they know have not known the true meaning of Valentine Day so that their destinies could be preserved for their glorious future.

Dear brethren, Please let’s post this write up to our young ones to guide them in escaping the devil’s traps on future Valentine’s Days and pray that the power of God will prevail against the desires of the devil.

Valentine’s Day: Love and its contradictions

Once again,  February 14 has come when lovers gather to consummate Love.  An annual period of deceit has come again when lies, falsehood and intrigues make headline in our national dailies.  The origin of Valentine Day has many strands.  It was linked to pagan practices of early Roman religion before the advent of Christianity.

It was deeply rooted in Roman culture that when Christianity came to Rome, it did not still succeed in obliterating its essence nor existence, hence it was Christianized to give it an acceptable  colouration.

The Romans celebrated what was known as the feast of lupercalia.  In the bid to Christianize this ancient pagan practice, the Church officials at the time changed the name to St. Valentine’s Day.  In this first of lupercalia, youngmen and women choose partners for the festival by drawing names from a box.  Boys and girls who were matched by lot would be considered partners for the year.  When Christianity came to Rome, the priest attempted to redefine this Roman festival by substituting the drawing of Saints name for the names of the girls.  On St. Valentine’s Day the priest placed saints names into an urn or box.  The young people were required to draw names from the content of the box and are enjoined to emulate the life of the saints whose name appears in their lot.  In 496, Pope Gelasius changed the Lupercalia Festival of February 15 to St. Valentine Day February 14th.  The foundation of Valentine’s Day from early Roman festival anchored purely on sexuality.  The early Church tried to erode that culture by replacing elements of various love gods like Juno Februata, Eros, Cupid, Kama with an imaginary St. Valentine.

The story of Valentine is very contradictory.  Another story has it that Valentine were two people who were martyred on the same day and 14th February was chosen to celebrate their martyrdom.

Another story also has it that Valentine’s Day originated from an early European belief that the second week of February was when birds gather to mate.  There was this desire that lovers should also draw from the symbolic mating of birds to exchange gifts to coincide with what nature practices.  February 14th became significant in the life of man.

It states that Saint Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing Julia, the blind daughter of his jailer Asterius. The jailer’s daughter and his forty-four member household (family members and servants) came to believe in Jesus and were baptized.[

Saint Valentine’s Day, also known as Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine,[1] is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a holiday in most of them.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.[2] A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.

A Tribute to One of Nigeria’s best &greatest leaders – late General. Murtala Ramat Mohammed who was tragically murdered exactly 42 years ago on Friday the 13th 1976 by a group of disgruntled soldiers led by Lt.Col Buka Suka Dimka

Security and routine do not go together. Having dispensed with sizeable personal security and a motorcade, on Friday 13th February 1976, Murtala departed for work along his usual route. As his car crawled in the infamous Lagos traffic outside the Federal Secretariat in Ikoyi, a group of soldiers rushed over to the car and fired a volley of gunshots which killed Murtala, his ADC Lt Akintunde Akinsehinwa, his driver Sergeant Adamu Minchika, and his orderly Staff Sergeant Michael Otuwe.
Unbeknown to Murtala, as he made his way to work that day, a group of assassins including Lt-Colonel Dimka, Major Rabo, Captain Malaki and Lt William Seri were lying in wait for him. Each man had a different task. Captain Malaki was the “spotter” and his job was to signal Rabo and Seri when Murtala’s car approached. After only six months in office, Murtala Muhammed was assassinated in an abortive military coup led by Lt-Col Busa Sukar Dimka – the head of the army’s physical training corps. Dimka was the officer who a decade earlier had been accused of murdering his commanding officer, Lt-Colonel Okoro in Kaduna and of participating in death squads that summarily executed Igbo soldiers during the northern soldiers’ mutiny of July 1966. Yet somehow he had been allow remain in, and rise up the army.
Dimka had graduated from the Australian army officer cadet school in Portsea on December 13th 1963 along with Boniface Ikejiofor, an officer who took part in the Majors’ coup of January 1966. The two men were the first Nigerian army officers to train in Australia and successfully complete the course. Cadets from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines and the Pacific Islands also trained with them. Both young men ruined promising lives and careers by choosing to join different coup plots. Ironically Arthur Unegbe (then a Major) who was murdered during the January 1966 coup in which Ikejiofor took part, had attended Dimka and Ikejiofor’s passing out parade in 1963. Shortly after Murtala was murdered, Dimka rushed up the road to the nearby Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation from where he made the following nationwide broadcast that was interspersed with martial music:
“Good morning fellow Nigerians, this is Lt. Colonel B.S. Dimka of the Nigerian army calling. I bring you good tidings. Murtala Muhammed’s hypocrisy has been detected. His government is now overthrown by the young revolutionaries. All the Military Governors have no powers over the states they now govern. The state affairs will be run by the military brigade commanders until further notice. All commissioners are sacked, except for the armed forces and police commissioners who will be redeployed. All senior military officers should remain calm in their respective spots. No divisional commanders will issue orders to his formations until further notice. Any attempt to foil this plan from any quarter will be met with death. You are warned, it is all over the 19 states. All acts of resistance will be met with death. Everyone should be calm. Please stay by your radio for further announcements. All borders, airports and sea ports are closed until further notice. Curfew is imposed from 6am to 6pm. Thank you. We are all together.”
The clumsy syntax and inadvertent imposition of a “6am to 6pm” curfew in the above speech tells readers all they need to know about the intellect of the soldiers behind this coup (Dimka obviously meant 6pm to 6am, but got the hours the wrong way round). Then came several gestures which although small in isolation – demonstrated Murtala’s popularity across Nigeria. The commander of the elite 1st mechanised infantry division in Kaduna: Major-General Alani Akinrinade, immediately made a radio announcement proclaiming his loyalty to Murtala and condemning the attempted coup. Then when news of the coup spread, students at the University of Benin marched into the streets and staged an angry demonstration against the soldiers that had killed their hero. Given the manner in which Nigerian soldiers had slaughtered civilians between 1966 and 1970, this was a brave gesture by the students.
The Chief of Army Staff Lt-General Danjuma dispatched Colonel Ibrahim Babangida to dislodge Dimka from the radio station. Babangida knew Dimka personally and came face to face with him inside the radio station. Babangida spoke to Dimka in Hausa and tried to talk Dimka down, playing on Dimka’s knowledge of Babangida’s family and that he was a married man. In circumstances that have never been fully explained, Dimka somehow managed to walk out of the radio station unscathed and fled. The coup was eventually put down and many of the culprits arrested. Seven days of national mourning were declared in Murtala’s honour. At the end of these seven days, grief stricken Nigerians were given a public holiday.
