Coining of Nigeria’s Name

TODAY IN HISTORY: Exactly One Hundred and Twenty Two (122) years ago on January 8 1897, the name NIGERIA was coined.
In an article written on January 8 1897,Miss Flora Shaw, Colonial editor for the famous newspaper,Times of London,proposed the name Nigeria.Later in 1902,she married Sir Frederick Lugard who was then the High Commissioner of the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria and would later become the first Governor General of Nigeria between 1914 and 1919 after he successfully oversaw the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria.
